There are 1.043 million land-based telephone lines in Cuba and another 198,300 cellular lines. (2007) With greater investment starting in 1994 and then establishing a new Ministry of Information Technology and Communications in 2000 Cuba has greatly improved their telephone system. Wireless service is expensive and must be paid in convertible pesos, which effectively limits mobile cellular subscribership. A national fiber-optic system is under development; 95% of switches were digitized in 2006. Fixed telephone line density remains low, at less than 10 per 100 inhabitants and domestic cellular service is expanding but remains at only about 2 per 100 persons.

There are 169 AM radio stations and 55 FM with about 3.9 million radios in use. 2.64 million television sets receive 58 broadcast stations.

The internet is making headway into Cuba with 3,664 hosts using 5 ISPs, serving 1.31million users. (Note: Private citizens are prohibited from buying computers or accessing the Internet without special authorization. Foreigners may access the Internet in large hotels but are subject to firewalls. Some Cubans buy illegal passwords on the black market or take advantage of public outlets to access limited email and the government-controlled "intranet".)
